“Gum AI” empowered “Smart Toothbrush” won the Gold Medal at the 49th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions

(May, 2024)

The “Smart Toothbrush Navigated by Gum AI,” developed by the collaborative research team from Hong Kong Chu Hai College (HKCHC) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU), won the Gold Medal at the 49th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions!

The “smart toothbrush” can accurately annotate smartphone selfies through visual gum health levels using advanced machine learning algorithms and real-time image and signal processing technology. With pressure and inertial motion sensors, the toothbrush ensures optimal oral hygiene based on the individual’s gum condition.

Congratulations to the research team for their innovative contribution to oral health technology!

HKU Technology Transfer Office coordinated the participation.

  • “GumAI” was fully supported by a grant from the Research Grants Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China (Project No. UGC/FDS13/E01/22)
  • The ”Smart toothbrush” is a collaborative effort of the research team of the Department of Computer Science at HKCHC and that of Professor Walter Lam from the Faculty of Dentistry at HKU.
