Workshop on Generative AI Applications and Local Deployment

The Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Chu Hai College, in collaboration with the Quality Office, held a workshop on Generative AI Applications and Local Deployment on 29 April 2026.

Mr. Patrick Tung introduced practical ways of using generative AI in teaching, administrative work and daily office tasks. He gave an overview of common generative AI tools, including AI chatbots and image or video generation platforms. He also explained basic ideas such as prompts, tokens, large language models and retrieval-augmented generation, using examples that participants could relate to in daily work.

The session also covered how AI can be used to create simple tools for routine tasks. Examples included file processing, image resizing, format conversion and small interactive web applications for teaching demonstrations. These examples showed how staff members can use AI not only to search for information, but also to build lightweight tools that support their own work.

Another part of the workshop focused on the difference between cloud-based AI services and local deployment. Mr. Tung introduced several examples of local AI tools and explained how running models on local hardware may help reduce costs and improve data privacy in suitable situations.

Participants were encouraged to identify small workflow problems in their own work and explore whether AI tools could help reduce manual effort.
