Dr. Tony Yulin Zhu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Chu Hai College, and MSAAI student Jun Feng presented their latest research at the 2026 6th International Conference on Computer Vision, Application and Algorithm (CVAA 2026), held in Hong Kong from 18 to 20 September 2026.

Shadow2Points proposes an end-to-end multimodal framework for reconstructing three-dimensional point clouds from multi-illumination shadow sequences. Rather than treating shadows as unwanted noise, the method uses changing shadows under different lighting directions as geometric cues. A convolutional encoder extracts visual features from binary shadow masks, fuses them with light-direction features, and a multilayer perceptron decoder outputs point coordinates under a probabilistic matching loss. The authors evaluated the approach on a ShapeNet-based synthetic shadow dataset and reported preliminary sim-to-real transfer on real captured sequences.
The conference provided a platform for academic exchange in computer vision and for MSAAI students to present peer-reviewed research in an international setting.
